    Corps Team Provides Expertise for Replacement Project—Per interagency agreement with National Nuclear Security Administration

    Based on an Interagency Agreement with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the District is executing a broad mission of engineering and construction related activities related to the Chemistry Metallurgy Research Replacement (CMRR) Project in Los Alamos, N.M.

    Joseph Lopez and Roger Apodaca, District’s Abiquiu Lake equipment operators, narrowly escaped a flash flood while steadily maneuvering heavy equipment owned by the Corps to help clear debris from a flooded area of Santa Clara Canyon.

    Santa Clara Canyon Debris Removal Turns Perilous

    Abiquiu Lake Operations Manager Dave Dutton visited Santa Clara Canyon to see the progress made by Joseph Lopez and Roger Apodaca, District’s Abiquiu Lake equipment operators, and was astounded. He said there was absolutely no way the Santa Clara Pueblo would be as far up their canyon without the Corps’ help.

    Abiquiu Project Staff Enjoy Movie Partly Filmed at Site

    Last summer, the District’s staff at Abiquiu Reservoir played host to about 200 people during a two-week span, for filming of parts of “Cowboys and Aliens.”

  • Firefighters Bed Down at Corps’ Campground

    As of July 11, the Las Conchas fire continues to burn and has scarred nearly 150,000 acres of Santa Fe National Forest in Sandoval, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties in northern New Mexico and has caused eight injuries.

    Corps Program Recruits Minnows

    Endangered animals frequently survive in natural habitats that have been grossly altered or have largely disappeared due to human or natural causes. In the case of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow, water development projects and practices on the Rio Grande and the Pecos River have contributed to the elimination of this fish from most of its original range.

    New Turbine Increases Hydroelectric Power

    Despite a rough beginning more than two decades ago, the Abiquiu hydroelectric facility’s third turbine officially turned on when Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) pushed the start button at a ceremony at the facility April 21.

    A dedicated team representing the Albuquerque District traversed the high desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range, N.M., March 27 for the 22nd Annual Bataan Memorial Death March.
