Albuquerque District public affairs
Published May 18, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District announced today that Cochiti Lake will reopen for recreation beginning Thursday, May 19, 2022.

Cochiti Lake was used as a water supply to combat the spread of the nearby Cerro Pelado Fire. The Cerro Pelado Fire is now 74% contained and the lake is no longer being used as a water supply in the Cerro Pelado firefighting efforts.

While Cochiti Lake is reopening at this time, the public should be aware that the lake is on standby to support aerial firefighting operations for the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire. Additional recreation closures may be necessary in the future depending on the spread of this wildfire.

In the Cochiti Recreation Area, day-use and camping will be offered to the public. This includes the boat ramp and swim beach. The Swim Beach is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. All camping is by reservation. Campground reservations may be made at www.recreation.gov.

The Visitor Center’s hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

In the Tetilla Peak Recreation area, only the day-use recreation area will reopen at this time. The campground remains closed until further notice.
