    Cochiti Rangers to the Rescue

    The Corps park rangers at Cochiti Lake had an unusual encounter of the canine kind Oct. 28, when they rescued two dogs, an elderly yellow lab and a younger mixed breed that looked similar to a Border Collie.

    Albuquerque District Will Celebrate National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,400 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Sept. 28. Albuquerque District will host five NPLD events this year at Abiquiu, Conchas, Cochiti and Santa Rosa lakes in New Mexico and John Martin Reservoir in Southeastern Colorado.

    Middle East Meets West: The Ebb and Flow of International Water Management

    On July 3, the Cochiti Project office, Albuquerque District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, had the honor of hosting water managers from various countries in the Middle East. The visiting managers represented the countries of Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Oman, the Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen.

    COCHITI LAKE, N.M., -- Working on drilling the new well.

    New Well at Cochiti to Provide Much-Needed Water

    On Sept. 27 the Cochiti Project’s pump for its water well went out. During the process to replace the 20 horsepower pump, the original well, drilled in 1964, collapsed. A whole new well had to be drilled to restore the water supply, said Cochiti Lake Project Manager Mark Rosacker. If everything goes according to plan, the new well is expected to be online shortly after Thanksgiving.

    JOHN MARTIN RESERVOIR, COLO., -- Volunteers Deborah West and her granddaughter Kyra Bierbaum pulled weeds and sunflowers on the south shore of John Martin Reservoir to help promote critical nesting habitat for the Piping Plover and Interior Least Tern at the 2012 National Public Lands Day event held at the reservoir.

    Volunteers Improve Lands Managed by the Corps

    Volunteers arrived at the Albuquerque District’s lake and dam locations to help with improvement projects as part of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) Sept. 29.

    Cochiti Lake Hosts Second Annual Triathlon

    The 2012 Cochiti Triathlon was held at Cochiti Lake July 29. It was organized by Chasing 3 Race Productions and was an official triathlon, sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the national governing body for many types of sports and racing events and a federation member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. All participants in this triathlon were members of the USA Triathlon or needed a one-day pass in order to compete.

    On March 27, 2012, Cochiti Project employees hosted seven professional water managers representing five counties in the Sahel Region of Africa. Specifically, the water managers represented Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal.     Cochiti Lake Project Welcomes International Visitors

    For the third year, employees in the Corps’ Cochiti Lake project welcomed visitors with the Council on International Relations (CIR) and discussed Cochiti Dam history and operations. This year, the group also learned about the aftermath of the Las Conchas Fire and the Corps’ tribal relations and partnerships.

    Log Boom Necessary to Help Sequester Debris at Cochiti Lake

    The District has generated outreach materials and has updated its website to remind boaters and kayakers visiting Cochiti Lake that a log boom is in place.

    New Dock to Enable Park Rangers to Respond on Lake Faster

    The District completed the installation of a fully enclosed service dock at Cochiti Lake March 2, allowing the project’s patrol boat to be on the water at all times. It is an improvement the park rangers believe will have significant public safety benefits.
