    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., -- Jerry Nieto, project manager, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District, points to where construction of the Southwest Valley Flood Reduction Phase 2C Project will occur. Nieto recently attended a media conference, organized by Bernalillo County, to discuss a variety of projects under construction in the Southwest Valley.

    Phase 2C of the Southwest Valley Flood Reduction Project was awarded July 15, 2014. The cost of construction for this Phase is approximately $4,000,000.

    Water Managers Cooperate to Create Beneficial River Flows

    Flows on the Rio Grande from Albuquerque to Elephant Butte Reservoir will increase this week in a coordinated effort aimed at triggering a spawn of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. This pioneering effort by federal and non-federal water managers will create conditions that haven’t naturally occurred over the last four years due to drought.

    New Headquarters Tribal Liaison Visits District and Local Tribal Leaders

    Recently the District was honored to have the new Corps’ Senior Tribal Liaison, Lisa Morales, visit. While in the District, Morales and Dr. Ron Kneebone, Albuquerque District tribal liaison, met with representatives from five Native American Tribes within the District’s Area of Responsibility.

    125 Years of Systematic Streamgaging

    As part of 2014’s Earth Day events, the District joined the USGS in a celebration for the 125th anniversary of the Embudo streamgage which was constructed as part of a training site for hydrographers and hydrologists to support irrigation in the desert southwest.
