    Counting Fish in a Fluid Environment

    On a hot, sultry, mid-August day, I’m standing thigh-deep in the slow, muddy Rio Grande watching U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fishery Biologist Dr. Michael “Mick” Porter and Aquatic Ecologist Justin Reale; Eric Gonzalez, Michael Hatch, Matt McMillan, biologists with SWCA Environmental Consultants; and TetraTech biologist Michael Marcus seine for fish.
  • Destroyed West Puerto de Luna diversion dam on Agua Negra Creek. Formerly, an earthen and masonry wall existed where the creek now flows, and water was diverted towards the left of the image through a headgate (hidden by the juniper) into the WPdL Ditch, with excess water flowing down the spillway (foreground). The dam was destroyed by flooding in 2006, but has since been rebuilt by the Corps of Engineers.

    A Community Perspective on the Corps’ Acequia Rehabilitation Program

    In recent years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has used its authority under the Acequia Rehabilitation Program of the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 to work with the communities, the State of New Mexico and other federal agencies to upgrade many acequias, including downstream of Santa Rosa, N.M., on the Pecos River.

    New South Pacific Commander Visits Albuquerque District

    The Albuquerque District was honored to host the new Commander of the South Pacific Division, Col. C. David Turner, July 29-31, 2013. The purpose of this visit was for Col. Turner to meet members of the Albuquerque team, stakeholders and partners, and familiarize himself with the unique mission and projects of the District.

    District Offers First STEM Internship

    This summer the District collaborated with the University of New Mexico to launch the District’s first eight-week STEM internship. Civil engineering student Corey Bowen started the internship May 28 and spent her time helping on several on-going design projects.

    Middle East Meets West: The Ebb and Flow of International Water Management

    On July 3, the Cochiti Project office, Albuquerque District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, had the honor of hosting water managers from various countries in the Middle East. The visiting managers represented the countries of Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Oman, the Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen.

    Corps Helps the Return of Stolen Navajo Nation Artifacts

    On July 9, the Corps of Engineers repatriated a large cache of sacred artifacts to the Navajo Nation. This is the first time in the history of the Omaha District, with some assistance from the Albuquerque District, that the return of artifacts to a tribal nation has occurred under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA).
