    New South Pacific Commander Visits Albuquerque District

    The Albuquerque District was honored to host the new Commander of the South Pacific Division, Col. C. David Turner, July 29-31, 2013. The purpose of this visit was for Col. Turner to meet members of the Albuquerque team, stakeholders and partners, and familiarize himself with the unique mission and projects of the District.

    Navajo Nation President Visits Albuquerque District

    The Albuquerque District welcomed Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly, March 15, 2013. Shelly visited the District’s office as part of executive level discussions on how to improve coordination and collaboration between the Corps and the Navajo Nation for current and future projects.

    Cochiti Dam Selected for Maintenance Management Review

    Jacobs Engineering, an independent contractor, was hired in 2011 to complete an assessment of the Corps’ Facility Equipment Maintenance (FEM) National Utilization Plan. According to best practices cited by Jacobs, an organization should be spending 4.8 percent of its budget on maintenance. Right now, the Corps spends about 0.2 percent. As a result of the assessment, Michael Ensch, chief of operations, Directorate of Civil Works, Headquarters, issued a national memorandum concerning the development of a maintenance management strategy. The memorandum detailed the creation of eight pilot studies, one for each of the Corps’ eight divisions, to be completed by November 2012.

    Fiscal Year 2012 was a banner year for the Albuquerque District, as the District exceeded its goals for contracts to small businesses in several categories.

    South Pacific Division Commander Promoted to Brigadier General

    Acting Army Chief of Engineers Maj. Gen. Merdith “Bo” Temple promoted South Pacific Division Commander Col. Michael C. Wehr to the rank of Brigadier General March 15 in a ceremony at the San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building.

    District Achieves another First for Tribal Program

    In the first meeting of its kind, Robert Isenberg and Maj. Seth Wacker, members of the South Pacific Division’s 59th Forward Engineering Support Team - Advanced (FEST) joined District Tribal Liaison Ron Kneebone in a visit with representatives of two New Mexico Pueblos Dec. 14 and 15. They met with the Pueblo of Santa Clara and the Pueblo de Cochiti to provide the Native American tribes with critically needed engineering support to address local infrastructure issues and to provide FEST members with real-world training.

    New Leader Assumes Command of South Pacific Division

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ South Pacific Division welcomed its 53rd Commander, Col. Michael C. Wehr, as he took command on June 3 during a change of command ceremony at the Bay Model Regional Visitor Center in Sausalito, Calif. Wehr accepted the Division guidon from the Deputy Commander of the Corps of Engineers, Maj. Gen. Merdith “Bo” Temple, during the symbolic passing of the colors with Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey Koontz and outgoing Division Commander Col. William Leady.

    District Leadership Convenes to Refresh the O-Plan

    To help ensure long-term success, a group of nearly 70 people gathered together Oct. 27-29 to refine and update the District’s Operations Plan, or O-Plan, as well as align the plan with the Division’s Implementation Plan and USACE’s Campaign Plan.
