 Fishing

Abiquiu Lake can be excellent for Walleye, Small Mouth Bass, Rainbow and Brown Trout.

 Geocaching

Geocaching is permitted on Corps lands at Abiquiu only with express knowledge and approval of the project manager. Click here for more information.

 Hiking

Explore the many trails, rated moderate to difficult, in the nearby Santa Fe and Carson National Forests.

  • Overlook Interpretive Trail is an easy hike that highlights indigenous plants and scenic focal points of the area.
  • The Abiquiu Lake Vista Trail is a 4.4-mile hike and bike stackedlooped trail system. This means that inter-connected loops provide users with options to add or duplicate loops to determine their desired distance.
  • The Old Spanish Trail is a 7-mile corridor that connects Abiquiu Dam to the Pueblo de Abiquiu. Originally used by Antonio Armijo in 1829 as a trade route to Southern California, it is now a seldom-used single lane dirt road that runs along the beautiful canyons of the Rio Chama.
 Picnicking

Dine and relax outdoors. Picnic facilities are available under the trees along the river at the Rio Chama Recreation Area. Facilities are also available with a view of the lake at Cerrito Recreation Area and the Overlook.

 Riana Campground

The Riana Campground is located on a 150-foot rock bluff overlooking Abiquiu Lake at 6,400 feet above sea level. The Riana Campground hosts 54 campsites. A number of sites include electric hookups and water hookup, shelters, grills, lantern holders, and tent pads. Other facilities include a play structure, showers, dump station, and picnic and fishing areas.

The campground is open annually April 15-Oct 15, and fees range from $10-$20. Campsites need a reservation. In-advance or same-day reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov. On sites 1-39 only, you can have two camping units. Two motorized, wheeled units are allowed at these sites, but must fit into the confines of the site. Sites 40-54 are primitive tents sites only with two tents allowed per site. Lake shore access for boat launching is 1 mile from the campground. During the open season, there is an attendant available at 505-685-4561.

As of April 15, 2024, the fees are as follows:

  • $10 for primitive tent sites with no utilities.
  • $15 for trailer accessible sites without utility hookups.
  • $20 for camp sites with full electrical and water hookups
 Swim Beach

Located in the Cerrito Recreation Area by group shelter 4, it was completed in 2015. Use at your own risk as there are no life guards on duty. No pets or glass are allowed on the beach.

 Water Sports

Refresh yourself in the cool waters of Abiquiu Lake. The lake is open to all types of water sports, including windsurfing, water-skiing and personal watercraft.

 Wildlife Viewing

Bring your binoculars and camera. Enjoy watching birds of prey, songbirds and waterfowl among impressive views of colorful rock formations along the Chama River, downstream of the dam and around the lake.
