    National Public Lands Day is Sept. 26, 2015. NPLD is the nation's largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. It began in 1994 with three sites and 700 volunteers. It proved to be a huge success and became a yearly tradition, typically held on the last Saturday in September.

    District waives fees, holds events in observance of National Public Lands Day

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it will waive day use fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches at its recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 26. The Albuquerque District also announced that there will be National Public Lands Day events at Abiquiu, Cochiti and Santa Rosa lakes in N.M. and at John Martin Reservoir in Colo.

    On March 27, 2012, Cochiti Project employees hosted seven professional water managers representing five counties in the Sahel Region of Africa. Specifically, the water managers represented Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal.     Cochiti Lake Project Welcomes International Visitors

    For the third year, employees in the Corps’ Cochiti Lake project welcomed visitors with the Council on International Relations (CIR) and discussed Cochiti Dam history and operations. This year, the group also learned about the aftermath of the Las Conchas Fire and the Corps’ tribal relations and partnerships.

    FEST Returns to Continue Technical Assistance to Pueblos

    In a second trip to Albuquerque, the South Pacific Division’s 59th Forward Engineering Support Team - Advanced (SPD FEST-A) visited the District in the beginning of March to continue lending engineering support to two New Mexico Pueblos.

    District Achieves another First for Tribal Program

    In the first meeting of its kind, Robert Isenberg and Maj. Seth Wacker, members of the South Pacific Division’s 59th Forward Engineering Support Team - Advanced (FEST) joined District Tribal Liaison Ron Kneebone in a visit with representatives of two New Mexico Pueblos Dec. 14 and 15. They met with the Pueblo of Santa Clara and the Pueblo de Cochiti to provide the Native American tribes with critically needed engineering support to address local infrastructure issues and to provide FEST members with real-world training.

    The Corps installed 50, 20-foot-long log booms in the canyon portion of Cochiti Lake, a half mile upstream of the Tetilla boat ramp, to catch debris.

    In response to the large amount of debris that was flowing into the Corps’ Cochiti Lake from the aftermath of the Las Conchas Fire, the District decided to install 50, 20-foot-long log booms on Nov. 17 to help collect future debris.

    New Mexico’s Worst Wildfire Contained by Collaboration

    The USDA Forest Service reported Aug. 1 that, after 36 long days, firefighters fully contained the Las Conchas Fire, the largest wildland fire in New Mexico’s recorded history.

    Cultural Immersion Course Promotes Introspection

    Imagine being given the opportunity, as part of your work, to step outside your culture and become completely immersed in the culture of another for several days, to be truly welcomed into homes of people who have different beliefs and vastly different historical experience, and to be shown why certain plants, animals and land features play an intricate role in their existence.

    Contractors from Advanced Environmental Solutions, Inc. of Belen, N.M., wore personal protective equipment and performed the actual clean up at the Cochiti project.

    While old transformers, antifreeze and aerosol cans aren’t significant archeological findings at the District’s Cochiti field project, they do signal that an environmental clean-up could be necessary.
