Scrutinizing Sediment Deposits at Cochiti Lake

The effectiveness of Cochiti Dam for sediment control has led to a serious issue confronting the reservoir—sediment deposition is reducing reservoir storage capacity and causing significant aggradation upstream within the Rio Grande channel. Monitoring sediment volume, spatial distribution and rate of deposition is of paramount concern to the District. Consequences for the operation and life expectancy of Cochiti Dam and Reservoir are at stake.

District Employee is Code Talker’s Grandchild

Recently New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez proclaimed Jan. 7, 2012, as “Keith Little Day.” Little passed away at age 87 in Fort Defiance, Ariz., Jan. 3. He was one of four surviving Navajo Code Talkers.

Log Boom to Help Clear Lake of Debris

In response to the large amount of debris that was flowing into the Corps’ Cochiti Lake from the aftermath of the Las Conchas Fire, the District decided to install 50, 20-foot-long log booms on Nov. 17 to help collect future debris.

Firefighters Bed Down at Corps’ Campground

As of July 11, the Las Conchas fire continues to burn and has scarred nearly 150,000 acres of Santa Fe National Forest in Sandoval, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties in northern New Mexico and has caused eight injuries.

Corps Program Recruits Minnows

Endangered animals frequently survive in natural habitats that have been grossly altered or have largely disappeared due to human or natural causes. In the case of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow, water development projects and practices on the Rio Grande and the Pecos River have contributed to the elimination of this fish from most of its original range.
