The district’s Acequia Restoration and Rehabilitation program successfully negotiated and awarded a construction contract in September 2024, for project work to support the La Joya Acequia, which is located between the cities of Contreras and La Joya in Socorro County, New Mexico.

The work consists of clearing and preparing the existing open channel through debris and invasive vegetation removal, followed by the installation of approximately 1,400 feet of six-inch thick concrete lining. This preventative measure addresses not only significant conveyance losses, evapotranspiration, weak embankments, high sedimentation, and other damages caused by high flows, it will also result in a safer working environment and more manageable maintenance for the acequia association for years to come.
