NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District and New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission
BACKGROUND: The project consists of construction of approximately 43 miles of levee to replace existing west side spoil bank located along the Rio Grande, extending from the upper end of the Rio Grande Low-Flow Conveyance Channel at the San Acacia diversion works to Tiffany Junction approximately 11 miles upstream of Elephant Butte Reservoir. The primary benefit is the protection of the Rio Grande Low-flow Conveyance Channel from Rio Grande flooding. At present, the project is being reviewed to reaffirm its costs and benefits in the Reevaluation Report. Because of the many stakeholders interested in the Rio Grande, this project has significant interest from many different Federal, State and private entities. The Reevaluation Report will reaffirm the project’s feasibility costs and benefits.
STATUS: The project is included in the Administration’s Fiscal Year 2013 budget request.
