U.S. Armed Forces physical therapists provide patient care in Ziguinchor, Senegal, May 6, 2026. This MEDREX is planned and executed by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), and prepares military medical professionals to provide care outside of traditional clinical settings. By working alongside African partners, U.S. and Senegalese medical teams refine their ability to deliver rapid, adaptable, and resource-efficient medical care, directly increasing medical readiness for large-scale combat operations. African Lion 2026 (AL26) is U.S. Africa Command’s largest annual joint exercise, designed to strengthen collective security capabilities of the U.S., African nations, and global allies. Co-led by SETAF-AF from April 20 to May 8, 2026, and hosted in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia, AL26 involves over 5,600 personnel from more than 40 nations, using innovation to drive partner-led regional security. FILE: 101st Airborne Division’s Desert Storm Operations Shaped Modern Air Assault Warfare
The 101st Airborne Division played a major role during Operation Desert Storm, demonstrating the power of large-scale air assault operations and modern helicopter warfare during the Gulf War. In 1991, the division conducted one of the largest and deepest air assault operations in military history, using helicopters to rapidly move Soldiers, artillery, fuel and supplies deep into Iraq behind enemy lines. The division established Forward Operating Base Cobra approximately 90 miles inside Iraq, inserting combat power deep into enemy territory in support of coalition forces. Aviation assets, including UH-60 Black Hawks, CH-47 Chinooks, and AH-64 Apache helicopters, enabled rapid maneuver across the desert, while Task Force Normandy, led by then Lt. Col. Richard Cody, destroyed Iraqi radar sites during the opening moments of the air war. The operation helped shape modern air assault doctrine and reinforced the division’s legacy as the Army’s premier air assault force. (U.S. Army archive video)

FILE: 101st Airborne Division’s Vietnam War Legacy Shaped Modern Air Assault Warfare
The 101st Airborne Division played a major combat role during the Vietnam War, evolving from a parachute infantry division into one of the Army’s premier air mobile and air assault forces. Deployed to Vietnam in 1965, the division conducted combat operations throughout the jungles and mountains of I Corps Tactical Zone near the Demilitarized Zone. During operations in the A Shau Valley, the Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hamburger Hill, soldiers used helicopters to rapidly maneuver troops, resupply remote positions and conduct combat operations across difficult terrain. In 1968, the division officially reorganized as an airmobile division, helping shape the modern air assault tactics and helicopter warfare doctrine still associated with today’s Screaming Eagles. FILE: 101st Airborne Division’s World War II History Shaped Modern Air Assault Doctrine
The 101st Airborne Division played a critical role during World War II as one of the Army’s first airborne divisions, conducting parachute and glider assaults behind enemy lines in support of Allied operations across Europe. Known as the “Screaming Eagles,” the division participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, and the defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. From securing key terrain and bridges to holding defensive positions under extreme conditions, the division helped shape modern airborne and air assault doctrine while establishing a legacy of rapid deployment, toughness and combat readiness that continues today. 2026 Schofield Barracks Prescribed Burn Broll
U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii wildland firefighters and members of the U.S. Forest Service conduct a prescribed burn of the Schofield Barracks training area May 11, 2026. Prescribed burns are an essential part of U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii’s natural resource management program and provide a safe and effective method for reducing invasive vegetation that can fuel dangerous wildfires. Highly flammable guinea grass and other invasive vegetation create significant fuel loads that threaten natural resources, including habitat for the endangered O‘ahu ‘Elepaio, a native flycatcher species residing in forested areas above the training range. More than 1,700 acres were treated during this year’s prescribed burn operations. New this year, the U.S. Forest Service employed a Freefly Alta X uncrewed aerial system to safely ignite remote sections of the training area, increasing firefighter safety and operational effectiveness. Why This Mid-Career Dentist Chose to Serve
CPT Mara Pagan is an Army dentist who left a lucrative but stressful 15-year career in the civilian sector to find deeper meaning in Army service. She describes burnout, corporate pressure, and how insurance plans hampered her ability to care for patients. Despite taking a significant pay cut, CPT Pagan highlights how the Army gave her the clinical freedom to treat patients based on their medical needs rather than their financial limitations. In the Army Dental Corps, she has found a renewed sense of purpose in being the dentist she always wanted to be. Music title "Phoenix" by Scott Buckley (@ScottBuckley) – released under CC-BY 4.0.
