    Corps and other Government Agencies Partner for Urban Waters Middle Rio Grande Initiative

    On Dec. 11, 2013, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District, along with several other government agencies, kicked off the Urban Waters Middle Rio Grande conservation initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to address both environmental justice and water quality issues in the Middle Rio Grande.

    In December, several District employees received recognition for their outstanding work and performance in fiscal year 2013, including Supervisor and Employee of the Year, Ranger of the Year and others.

    During the District’s Winter Ball, Dec. 6, 2013, Frederic “Fritz” Blake was officially inducted into the District’s Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees.
  • District Employees Receive Steel, Bronze de Fleury Medals

    In December, four District Employees received one of the highest honors awarded in the Corps of Engineers - the de Fleury Medal.
  • Tunnel Rehab in Afghanistan: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Repairs Vital Transportation Link

    The Salang Tunnel is a vital link connecting Afghanistan with Central Asia and Russia, but in the past 49 years the tunnel had deteriorated into a deathtrap. In 2012 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) began short-term improvements. Just one year later, the Corps is ready to flip the switch on the final repairs.

    DOD Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month

    November was designated as National Native American Heritage Month by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. In a joint interview with American Forces Press Service and the Pentagon Channel, Joe Sarcinella, DOD's senior advisor and liaison for Native American Affairs, discussed the department's efforts to recognize Native Americans and their contributions to the country dating back to Revolutionary War.

    District Hosts Bi-Annual Rio Grande Basin Meeting

    The Albuquerque District hosted the Rio Grande Basin meeting on September 17-18, to discuss the impacts of the devastating wildfires during the past two years in the upper basin, and the resulting prior and present flooding.
  • FEMA and USACE Prepare to Jointly Assist Tribal Nations During Disasters

    On September 25, USACE tribal liaison members visited FEMA's National Response Coordination Center in Washington, D.C. Georgeie Reynolds, senior tribal liaison, USACE HQ, Paul Cloutier, NWD Tribal Liaison, Rebecca Klein, Army National Guard assigned to the USACE Tribal program, and Ron Kneebone, Albuquerque district tribal liaison, met with FEMA personnel in order to lay out a path forward for better collaboration efforts between the two agencies in order to better assist tribal nations during emergencies.
  • Agencies Collaborate to Save Culvert, Road and Money

    The 2012 monsoonal rain season brought runoff which carred debris, choking the culvert under Galisteo Dam's access road. Safety concerns prompted the District to save the road. However the necessary fix wasn’t going to be cheap, especially in this era of budget belt-tightening.

    Albuquerque District Will Celebrate National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,400 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Sept. 28. Albuquerque District will host five NPLD events this year at Abiquiu, Conchas, Cochiti and Santa Rosa lakes in New Mexico and John Martin Reservoir in Southeastern Colorado.
