A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the McKinley Channel Project will be held June 8, 2022, in Alamogordo, N.M.

The City of Alamogordo is excited to announce the completion of the McKinley Channel Project, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 1:00 pm.

Lt. Col. Patrick M. Stevens, commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Albuquerque District said, “I couldn’t be more pleased with the partnership between the City of Alamogordo and USACE. This project is a shining example of a community coming together to work through the challenges of a large infrastructure project in the heart of a city. Without the support and involvement of the city government and the community, we would not be where we are today.”

The US Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the City of Alamogordo will be hosting a ceremonial ribbon cutting for this final phase of the McKinley Channel Project. The ceremony will be held at Washington Park on the Northside of the Channel near the pavilion, all are welcome to attend.

“Alamogordo is fortunate to have received such large infrastructure investments from the Corps of Engineers to build these flood control projects, which benefit our citizens by improving safety. Our partnership with this agency has lasted for decades, and has resulted in critical improvements to protect our city from large flood events,” said Public Works Director, Nancy Beshaler.

There are no well-defined watercourses in the Tularosa Basin so flooding in arroyos on the west slope of the Sacramento Mountains have historically flowed through the city of Alamogordo, causing extensive damage to residential, business, and public property.

“The McKinley Channel was a wonderful opportunity to support this community’s toughest engineering challenge. The concept of the project began in the 1960s and resulted in this 11-year construction project that will protect 1200 homes and businesses from a 100-year storm event. We feel privileged to be given the opportunity to support the citizens of Alamogordo,” said Stevens. “I’d like to thank the citizens of Alamogordo for having the trust and confidence in the Corps of Engineers to deliver on their toughest engineering challenges. It truly fills my heart with pride to know the team can deliver when called, and I look forward to one day showing my grandchildren what we, as partners, accomplished here.”

Please join the City of Alamogordo and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on June 8th as we wrap up this very large and exceptionally important project here in Alamogordo.
