Santa Clara Governor
As Climate Changes, Santa Clara Strives To Become Resilient To Worsening Fires, Floods: Santa Clara Pueblo Gov. Michael Chavarria stands before one of four debris collection structures installed this past winter to help protect infrastructure and roads downstream. The structure captures sediment, boulders and trees washed down the mountain during flash floods. New flood scars carved into the peaks above weren’t easily visible at first, but lateral movement of the water has carved them into wide ravines. ‘Now,’ says Chavarria, ‘you can see them from the community.’ Margaret Wright/The New Mexican
